Five sentences with…. Tania Hershman

It’s a big excitement for me today to welcome Tania Hershman here to finish my sentences.

And although it’s unlikely, I’m hoping that one reader at least doesn’t know Tania, so I can be the one to introduce you to her stories. They are wonderful. Polished jewels of poetry and thought. Here’s one of my favourites. Read it and you’ll see exactly what I mean. And then you’ll be wanting to dash off to buy her collection. Before you do though, watch this video of her talking and then read her questions below…

So Tania, go for it! Finish my sentences…

When you were small, you wanted to be … a writer. I’m pretty sure I did. I was always writing stories.

You may not say it aloud but …
I want a best friend, the way we had best friends when we were kids, that one person to whisper to in class, to talk on the phone to for an hour every night.

The last time you went ‘WOOP’ with excitement was …
when the Arts editor of New Scientist emailed me the other week and said she’d like some new science-inspired fiction, something I’ve been waiting for NS to ask me for for about a decade! Woop!

Something that never fails to give you inspiration is …
other people’s creativity, whether that be fantastic short stories or a brilliant film, I find films very inspiring. If it’s great it makes me want to go and create.

Your five favourite words are …
“tachanamerkazit”, which is a fabulous Hebrew phrase, only slightly diminshed when I found out it meant “Central Bus Station”. Also: lamellapodia, a biological term for something to do with the cell; serendipity; chutzpah, and discombobulated.

Right, now you can go and buy her book, via the tachanamerkazit, of course…

Interesting interview (although I found the “pulsing” wall behind Tania a little hard on the eyes) – I’ll have to check out some of her recommendations.

Rachel, thanks so much, glad you liked it! Thanks to Sarah for having me!

Dan, how funny, I don’t think it pulsed at the time, it must be some arty addition to the video, sorry about that!
