I’m loving getting people to finish my Five Sentences, but one thing that’s surprising me is how clearly the individual voices come across.
Now, obviously you don’t know this yet because you’ve only had one (even if that was Jonathan Pinnock) but today I’m very very happy to welcome Scott Pack to the blog.
I’ve known Scott for several years now, and although he’s been called lots of things by lots of people, he’s always been a true friend to writers and books, not least through his blog, which is essential reading. In fact, I was proud to include a dedication to him in Something Beginning With when it was re-published. (Knowing Scott though, he might have preferred something like this on Caroline’s blog! I do – kind of – wish I’d had the courage…)
Scott also writes books himself, under the pseudonym of Steve Stack, and in honour of his latest book, 21st Century Dodos, I invited him here to finish my sentences for me…
When you were small, you wanted to be … a vet, but back then you needed to have an O level in a foreign language and I wasn’t very good at languages. I also wasn’t all that interested in science. Or animals.
That last bit is a lie. I do like animals.
Although I am not so keen on dogs.
Or horses.
You may not say it aloud but … actually I do say it aloud. That’s my problem.
The last time you went ‘WOOP’ with excitement was … I can honestly say, hand on heart, that I have never gone WOOP. Not once. I may cry HUZZAH! every now and again but that is very different and for reasons I am not at liberty to disclose here. (Sarah here: I think it may be something to do with cake….)
Something that never fails to give you inspiration is … Everything fails to inspire once in a while. All the more fun finding something new when that happens.
Your five favourite words are … Fuck. Fucking. Fucker. Fuckwit. Cake.
Thanks, Scott/Steve. Hah! Fuck though, try fucking making a fuckwit sentence out of those five words, fucker, and you deserve a cake.
And by the way, I can PROMISE inspiration in the pages of his book. I’ve already written one poem as a direct result called, appropriately, Extinction.
Scott is also carrying out the exhausting mission of reading and commenting on a short story every day this year, you can read the results here.
